Some sayings from the Hagakure

One must remain slightly aloof in order to achieve anything important.

If one is constantly followed around by hangers-on, it is difficult to get things done.

A samurai should know his own stature, pursue his discipline with diligence, and say as little as possible.

Young men these days are becoming effeminate ... everything has become passive, and strong resolution is no longer valued.

When a samurai attains the highest level, he is able to dispose of any situation on the basis of his own wisdom, so that he no longer need follow the teachings of others ...

I do not know how to excel others: all I know is how to excel myself.

The best conduct with regard to speaking is to remain silent.

At least if you think you can manage without speaking, do not speak.

What must be said should be said as succinctly, logically, and clearly as possible.

A surprising number of people make fools of themselves by talking without thinking.

Become the sort of person others do not approach easily.

One should take important considerations lightly; small matters should be taken seriously.
